A user of a darknet forum claims in Russian to have over 20 million access data to OpenAI accounts. He is offering sample data with email addresses and passwords for sale, reports GbHackers.
The alleged amount of data alerted security experts and OpenAI is investigating the incident. So far, however, there is no evidence of a direct attack on OpenAI systems, according to Decrypt.co. It remains unclear whether ChatGPT users are affected.
Security researcher Mikael Thalen found invalid email addresses in the sample data. A forum entry by the suspected hacker also referred to malware for password theft. But this was deleted.
It is unclear whether the figure of 20 million affected accounts is correct. Nevertheless, users should change their password to be on the safe side and check for suspicious activity. If the dataleak is confirmed, it would be the third major security incident at OpenAI since ChatGPT's launch, according to Heise.
