The official recipe forum of the Thermomix manufacturer Vorwerk has fallen victim to a data leak. Criminals gained access to the data of 3.3 million users and then offered it for sale on the darknet.
International forums affected
The attack affected not only the German forum Rezeptwelt.de, but also the international platforms in Australia, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the Czech Republic. The stolen information includes email addresses, places of residence and dates of birth. Screenshots of the darknet offerings are already spreading on social networks.
Vulnerability exploited by external service provider
According to Vorwerk, the vulnerability was exploited by an external service provider, which meant that the sensitive data could be viewed for several days. However, the company's online shop was not affected. Furthermore, neither passwords nor financial data were among the stolen information.
Vorwerk apologises and warns users
In a statement, Vorwerk apologised for the inconvenience caused and announced that it would inform all affected users immediately. The company is working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the incident.
Vorwerk advises affected users to remain particularly vigilant, not to open suspicious emails and not to click on any links or attachments from unknown senders.
